I tried out the YES Life app from Android Market today on my HTC Desire Android.

The very first problem I have is that it almost took out my phone's internal memory storage space. YES Life developer have gotta work on app to SD.

2nd problem is that I cannot make calls. I checked the account balance on my phone is RM27.04. So why can't I make calls?

I can receive calls though. There's a little bit of lag feeling. Sound quality is not too bad. I want to further test this. Maybe make some other calls. Will update if there's any more test I do.

Bogus 200K in your bank

I got this email from a friend. I decided to share it here just for the sake of sharing. Please beware. 200K richer out of the blue could spell trouble.

Any cheque banked in into your account need a few days to transact. Although the amount appears in your account, but it's still pending for transaction, the person issuing the cheque can cancel the cheque at any time! A few days ago, one of my friends received a sms with the message: "You've strike 1st prize with a prize money of RM200,000 cash." The sms came with a contact no. My friend ignored it since he had heard of too many bogus scams using similar tactics. After a short while his handphone rang, a Miss Fang asked: "Sir have you received a sms telling you that you've strike 1st prize?" My friend answered: "Yes, I have" Miss Fang: "Please let us have your bank account number so that we can deposit the money into your account." My friend thought, why not, let's see what you can do. My friend has a buddy who works in that bank. Hence, he gave her his account number. Ten minutes later, my friend's handphone started ringing again. Miss Fang said: "Sir, we have deposited your prize money into your account, please check and verify." My friend checked using his handphone and found that RM 200,000 was really deposited into his account. He was euphoric, just like that and he's RM 200,000 richer! 30 minutes later, Miss Fang called again. She was crying: "I'm sorry sir, I made a mistake, I forgot to deduct the tax before I deposited the prize money, 20% of RM 200,000 equals to RM40,000. Now the company wants me to reimburse the money. Can you please return the RM 40,000 tax? I beg you." My friend thought for a while and felt pity for the lady. Thinking of the money in his bank account, he went to the bank. Suddenly he thought of his buddy working in that bank and decided to ask his buddy to double check and confirm with him first. Upon checking, his buddy found out that the money was deposited using a cheque of a different bank. Even though the cheque was deposited but the actual amount of money can't be transfered into his account on the same day. If the other party decided to cancel the cheque, then he'll not get this RM 200,000. My friend was shocked. He almost lost RM 40,000. Before my friend left for home on that day, the cheque was actually cancelled. If not for his buddy, if not for him being a professional, or if he was cared of letting others know of striking the prize then this bogus scam would be successful. This is a true story, please beware. Future scams could be even better planned. Please don't forget to forward to your friends and relatives to warn them from being cheated. -- Thank you.

Blackberry Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException

I encounter this error on Cat's Blackberry last night. I googled for a solution and I found http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/Desktop-Software-for-PC/Uncaught-exception-java-lang-NullPointerException/td-p/37054

The error comes up every time I try to call out the camera function of the Blackberry. None of the videos can be played. It just stood still with nothing happening when I try to play any of the videos and music files. I even tried to cycle power it. It just never work.
I came to a point when I just want to give it up and send it to the service center.

I finally try one of the solutions mentioned in the forum. Shut down the Blackberry and take out the battery.
Wait for 5 minutes.

Put the battery back on and power up the Blackberry.
It will take a few minutes for it to load. I don't know what it does though but after the unit completely powers up, I try to use the camera again.
It works just like normal again. Tried to play the videos too. It is now working fine.

Please feedback if you do encounter the same problem. Let me know if you have any other solutions that worked.

Nautilus error and blank desktop

I got exactly the same problem mentioned here.

Could not update ICEauthority file /home/alex/,ICEauthority
(This one has been appearing for a while before the blank desktop problem started)

There is a problem with the configuration server.
(/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/alex/Desktop, /home/alex/.nautilus.
Before running Nautilus please create these folders or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them

It's really depressing. I've had quite a few problems to handle at work, my phone and now my Ubuntu.

I managed to solve it though.

Firstly, you just have to use

chmod 755 ~

to access your GUI. Before that, you need to go to recovery mode at least to access the Terminal. I think you can do it other ways but this works for me.

The reason this error came up was that I used an app called PySDM Storage Device Management. It really screws you up for good and you can't just uninstall to solve the problem. You have to remove all the settings you've set to to the whatever automount you wanted it to do.

Too bad I didn't capture any screenshot of this.

Google Contact Sync

My phone's contact have not been syncing since 18th Feb 2011. What's the problem?

I googled for solution. Apparently, there are no response from google.

So here I try.
1. Back up current contact list on my phone to SD card.
2. Clear the data.
3. Import from SD card. This will take a while if you have more than 500 contacts.
4. Try Sync.
5. Working!

A few observations though. I remember it used to sync to google contacts with "My Contacts" but I can see that it is syncing with "Other Contacts".
It seems that the contacts are sync into these 2 folders. The quantity of contacts I have on my phone is equal to the numbers added up from "My Contacts" and "Other Contacts".

Another is that all the contacts are duplicated. I know that google contacts got a function to remove duplication. I can try to use that. This is done on your PC logged in to gmail.

1. Move all contacts from "Other Contacts" to My Contacts". (If you try to sync here, it will take some time too as we have moved all contacts from one folder to another).
2. From here, you have 2 ways to remove the duplicates. One: Select the duplicates you can see as the contacts are arranged in alphabetical order then click on "More Actions". Select "Merge Contacts".
Two: You can select all the contacts and choose the "Find and Merge Duplicates...". If you trust that google's system is smart enough to handle it, choose this option.

This should solve the problem.

In Singapore F1 2010, for SGD188 (early bird SGD168), the cheapest for Singapore F1, we got to see Mariah Carey, Adam Lambert, Missy Elliott, Sean Kingston, Daughtry and more.

This year 2011, you get Rain to do the concert. You priced your cheapest tickets at RM60. Early bird discount of 50%. For RM30, we still need to top up RM138 to enter the concert.

By calculation and comparing apple to apple, SGD168 is better value for money comparing to RM168.

A few conclusions I can make.

1. Jamiroquai, you are dirt cheap.
2. Mariah Carey, Adam Lambert, Missy Elliott, Sean Kingston, Daughtry and more, you are great but still affordable.
